Abstract

We are often witnesses to newspaper articles of questionable authenticity. The person who is affected with the untrue article has a right to publish a denial of the article to repair the damage. It is believed that such denial could repair the inflicted injustice. The goal of this research is to examine the effect of the initial context about a person, the effect of negative information and the effect of the type of author of the denial on person impression formation. The subjects made their assessments after each of the three presentations in time intervals of one hour. The scale of semantic differential with 25 bipolar attributes was used as the measuring instrument. The results show that the person impression formation depended on the initial context. When the person was presented in a positive context, he/she was assessed as significantly more positive then when he/she was presented in a negative context. When negative information was presented it had a significantly more negative effect on the assessment of the person when it was initially presented in a positive context, than when the person was presented in a negative context. The assessments of the person after the denial differed significantly from the initial assessments of the person, depending on the initial context. When the person was presented in a positive context his/her assessment after the denial did not return to the same level of "positivity", but when a person was initially presented in a negative context his/her assessment after the denial was significantly more positive. The difference in the assessments of the person, depending on the type of author of the denial, was not shown to be significant. The subjects have assessed the person equally after the denial, regardless of whether the author of the denial was the journalist or "the victim".
